We know we can’t answer all of your questions without talking to you first, so here are a few of the most common we get from our clients.
Each project is specific and unique, which is why we believe in going to your home in person and providing a comprehensive estimate. Price varies depending on the preparations needed, trim details, color scheme, and square footage. Request an estimate to learn more about what your project will cost.

We service the municipalities of St. Louis and the greater metro area. While the majority of our service area is in the St. Louis area, we also service outside of St. Louis depending on the scope of the project. If your project is outside of our service area, contact us to learn more.
A combination of plastic, paper, drop clothes, etc. are used to mask off things we need to cover and protect. These things include walkways, decks, windows, roof lines, etc. In some cases, we will even remove things such as doors and mounting hardware if it saves time or produces a better result.
All of our painters and management team members are full-time employees. There are some projects that we will partner with other specialty construction trades partners on, such as gutter installers, roofers, tuckpointers, and masons.
To work on lead-related projects, individuals must complete an 8-hour training course followed by a pass/fail exam at an accredited EPA Lead Training facility. At D Johnson Painting, we prioritize safety and compliance by ensuring every team member, including paint and carpentry leads, project managers, and estimators, is individually trained and certified as an EPA Lead Safe Renovator. While the EPA mandates only one safety officer per certified business, we go above and beyond to ensure full accountability and adherence to safety standards on every project.
Yes, we are fully licensed, bonded, insured & EPA RRP Lead Safe Certified.
We take every precaution to prevent the spread of lead dust and debris by following EPA-required containment measures. This includes using plastic ground covers, taping windows and doors, and equipping all power tools with HEPA-filtered vacuum systems. Our team is always equipped with the proper PPE to minimize exposure to lead dust. Additionally, we conduct thorough inspections and clean the job site at the end of each day and project phase to ensure a safe environment throughout the process.
There aren’t any projects that are too small, but we do have a half-day minimum charge. When considering smaller projects, think about any additional tasks we could tackle within that time to make the most of the opportunity.
We use a wide range of products, carefully selected based on the type of project and the finish you want to achieve.
We take great care to protect your space by covering floors with floor paper and moving furniture to the center of the room, securely covered in plastic. Prior to starting the project, we’ll discuss a detailed strategy to ensure your belongings are well protected throughout the process.
As part of our standard process, we lightly scuff sand trim by hand to de-gloss the surface, ensuring proper paint adhesion. If oil-based or high-sheen paint is present, we may apply a power sand and a bonding primer coat if needed. Any imperfections, such as nicks or dings, in the walls, ceilings, or trim will be filled, sanded, and spot-primed for a smooth, flawless finish.
Absolutely! We offer free color consultations for most of our interior and exterior projects to provide expert guidance on these important decisions. We believe this step is crucial to ensuring you’re happy with the final result and that our paint job looks its best.
No, we do not offer a warranty for interior painting. Since interiors are not exposed to the elements, the longevity of the paint largely depends on how the surfaces are used and maintained by the homeowner. As we cannot control wear and tear, we are unable to provide a warranty for interior finishes. However, similar to our exterior work, we use high-quality products and techniques designed for long-lasting durability.
We choose from a variety of products based on the specific needs of each project and the conditions the surfaces will face after painting.
We take great care in protecting plants and soil during the prep and painting process. For smaller plants, we use 5-gallon buckets, while larger plants like Rhododendrons and Azaleas are covered with plastic sheeting or even bed sheets. To safeguard the soil, we use heavy-duty plastic, catch and cover garden fabric, or burlap when necessary. These protection strategies are discussed with the customer and Project Manager during the initial walk-through to ensure the best approach for your landscape.
The timeline for an exterior painting project can vary depending on factors like the size and age of the home, as well as prep requirements and the number of colors involved. On average, a typical home will take between 6 and 12 days to complete.
Yes, we offer an industry-leading 7-year exterior warranty, backed by decades of product testing and process refinement. While most paint warranties cover only the first half of the expected lifespan, we’re confident in the quality of our prep, products, and process, which typically ensure a paint job that lasts a minimum of 15 years—or longer.
Please note: Some surfaces, such as decks, steps, and porches that experience regular foot traffic, are not covered due to wear and tear beyond our control. Additionally, we generally cannot warranty dark colors with a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 20 or lower. While we do not offer a warranty on these surfaces, we still use the same high-quality products and processes to ensure maximum durability.
